Thinking about a homeschool room? I would highly recommend making space for one if you have it. Here are some things to consider if you’re on the fence.
Do I need a homeschool room?
No, of course not. Honestly your kids can technically work anywhere in the house. I went four homeschooling years without one. This year however I spent the summer creating a homeschool room in our family room and I LOVE IT!
Does a homeschool room help kids focus?
It helps me focus that’s for sure. When I can’t see the chores that need to be done in other rooms of the house I am a much more effective teacher. As far as the kids go, I try to keep the homeschool room free of distractions, and they do seem to focus better.
Why not just use the dining room table?
When you use the dining room table school has to stop every time you eat a meal. Work can’t be left out during lunch. Those minutes of wiping down the table, putting the work away, and then bringing it back out again really add up. Having a second table in our house has been awesome.
Do you still let the kids work in other rooms of the house?
Absolutely, but now it’s a reward for good behavior and diligence. For the most part, though we spend our time in the homeschool room.
What’s in Your Homeschool Room?
- No toys (some sneak their way down but they are not stored there)
- 1 cube organizer for this year’s curriculum
- 3 other bookshelves with books for the kids
- 2 sets of drawers for manipulatives and science equipment
- 1 couch and 2 comfy chairs
- A dining room table and 3 chairs
- Our T.V.
- Plenty of posters
- A desk that has our printer
- A trash can
- Educational games
Is it easy to keep organized?
Organization is so much easier with a homeschool room. With everything contained in one room school work and books get put away in a snap.
How long does it take to clean?
Not long at all actually. With just school stuff and no toys, it’s easy to clean up at the end of the day and start the next with a clean space.
Is it worth the space you need to sacrifice in your house?
Considering most of my waking hours are spent homeschooling, yes absolutely. We haven’t given up our T.V. room we simply rearranged it and got rid of the toys. The table does make things a little cramped but I’m happy enough with the layout.
Should I go on Pinterest to get ideas?
Ha! Only if you want to be intimidated. Seriously though, sure. I didn’t, and my room is far from Pinterest worthy but it’s functional and works for us.
How long did it take you to set your room up?
I did it slowly over the summer but probably could have gotten it done in a weekend.
What’s your favorite part?
It feels like we’re in school. There has been a positive dynamic shift between last year and this year. A lot of it is directly because of our homeschool room.
What does your homeschool room look like?
I’m so glad you asked. It’s nowhere near perfect but it has been awesome and a huge blessing to our school year.
